Iron Hammer
Ignore DEF +12% is the highest armour penetration on anything Breda sells. Iron Hammer costs 2450 Tria, requires VIT 17, and it exists for exactly one job: hitting things that are hard to hurt. P.ATK +16 and Max MP +22 fill out the line, but the number that decides whether you want this is that 12%. Against a heavily armoured target the hammer will out-damage weapons with far higher raw attack. Against something soft it will not, and the -0.10x attack speed makes that gap worse than it looks. That speed penalty is the steepest in the game. Every swing takes noticeably longer than with Iron Mace at 1750 Tria, which has no penalty at all and keeps your off hand free. Fighting a camp of weak mobs with an Iron Hammer is slow, tedious work. Two-handed, so no shield, which sits oddly on a weapon gated behind vitality. A VIT build usually wants to absorb damage rather than avoid fights, and giving up the off hand undercuts that. Tin Tortoise drops it at 3.93%, roughly one per 25 kills. Kettle Beetle also drops it, at 0.18%, which is one in 555 and not a plan. If you want the hammer without paying 2450 Tria, tortoises are the only realistic route. Breda pays 91 Tria for it back. A two-handed iron hammer, originally made for breaking doors, and still is mostly. Iron Hammer needs nothing unlocked beyond VIT 17. Carry it as a second weapon rather than a primary. Swapping to the hammer for an armoured boss and back to Iron Mace for everything else gets more out of 2450 Tria than using it as your everyday blunt weapon, where the speed penalty costs you more damage over a session than the penetration returns.
