Knotwood Round
Planks set in a steel rim, studs and all, and it blocks better than it has any right to. Knotwood Round is the starter shield, 1050 Tria at Breda behind VIT 7. Block +5% is the stat that matters and the reason to hold a shield at all. DEF +10, MDEF +2 and Max HP +20 are useful, but block chance is what the off hand slot is for, and no other equipment slot provides it. VIT 7 is the same requirement Wooden Club carries, which is no coincidence. The blunt line is one-handed at that level specifically so a vitality build can pair a weapon with this shield. Anyone who bought Mossback or another two-hander has no off hand to put it in, and that is the real cost of two-handed weapons at low levels. HP regeneration at +1.0 per second comes along as well. Breda buys it back at 39 Tria. No mob drops Knotwood Round, so buying is the only route. Whether 1050 Tria is worth it depends on your weapon. With a one-handed blunt or sword the shield is close to free value, since the slot was empty anyway. With anything two-handed it is 1050 Tria you cannot spend. Where it stops being enough: Block +5% triggers rarely enough that you notice the fights where it does not. Voidguard at VIT 15 raises that to +10% and more than doubles the defence at DEF +25, which is a large enough jump that Knotwood Round is best treated as temporary. Knotwood Round needs nothing unlocked beyond VIT 7. Buy it early on a vitality build and keep the receipt short. The eight levels between VIT 7 and VIT 15 pass quickly, and 1050 Tria spent here is 1050 Tria not saved toward the shield that replaces it. If you are close to VIT 15 already, skip this entirely.
