Set against Trashcan Lid at DEF +40, Block +12% and Max HP +65, this adds twenty defence, three percent block and thirty-five health. Against Voidguard from Breda at DEF +25 and Block +10%, it is more than double. Sixty defence in the off hand costs no movement at all, which is what makes shields the best value slot in the game for a vitality build and has been true at every tier. The only price is holding a one-handed weapon. That price is real at this tier. Heartwood Maul at Ignore DEF +25% and Scrap Sledge at +18% are both two-handed, and choosing either means giving up Oakward. Amber Mallet at VIT 35 keeps the hand free at P.ATK +31, and the sixty defence is worth more than the difference in attack for most fights. Recipe: 6 of a mid-tier forest material, 6 Living Bark and 1 Fossilized Amber alongside the bulk base. Oakward carries the forest-tier vitality requirement. Build it before anything else in the tier. No single armour piece changes what a Defender can survive as much as this shield, and at one Fossilized Amber it is not among the expensive things to make. Pair it with Amber Carapace at DEF +45 and the combined figure is beyond what any content in the game is built to overcome.
